Deadline to submit articles to the Journal is Feb 15 for the spring issue and Aug 15 for the Fall issue. If you have any information, photos, newspaper clippings, etc., about persons, places or dates that have a historical Blount County connection, please contact me through the BCGHS website.
Bakers Creek church and cemetery will be of particular interest in the spring journal. We found copies from an old log book of early baptisms from 1800s that will be transcribed. Sam Houston's mother, Elizabeth Paxton Houston, is buried at Bakers Creek and her genealogy will be explored. Elaine Russell will have a follow up to an early journal article with copies of original documents from William Carter, a Confederate Black soldier, who is buried at Bakers Creek.
Genealogies will be easier to find in past journals with a new index. A new series will be added starting in the Spring called "Look What I Found at the Library." Here is a hint: Bibles.
Many thanks to my Assistant Editor, Betty Best, for helping me with ideas and articles. Thanks to Tim Walker on his great work on the WWI soldier listing. We were not able to include this in the journal at this time due to the large amount of data but it is on our website. (I will consider an index of names for a future issue of the journal so specific information can be requested if the website is not an option.)
Watch for new announcements about the Spring 2018 Journal coming in March.
