We are working on the Fall Issue of The Blount Journal and planning to include an article on Blount County "first responders" killed in the line of duty. Officer Kenny Moats is the most current person to be included. We are not finding a lot of information on the first noted officer killed until we get to Bart Coker, who is noted in the newspapers as the second policeman killed in Blount County. This was a famous case made more so by the two lovers that committed the murder while on a crime spree in Blount County in the late 1930s. After Bart Coker was shot at a local business, a chase ensued. Mrs. Felty, a married woman with a 2 year old son, was caught. Ray Flynn escaped the chase and was later caught. Trying to not make this more about Felty and Flynn than Bart Coker is going to be my task. Felty served prison time and Flynn was sentenced to the gas chamber. You will have to wait for the rest of the story in the Fall 2018 issue.
