My second great grandfather was James Martin. He married Jane Glass in Blount County, TN on 9 Nov 1819. They lived the remainder of their lives in Blount County, raising 6 children: Jane Martin, William Alexander Martin (my great grandfather), Sarah Ann Martin, Ignatius W. Martin, Mary J. Martin and Robert Martin.
James died about 1873. His Will was probated in August, 1873 in Blount County. He can be found in the U.S. federal census in 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860. The last 2 census records show he was born in Virginia about 1792.
I have hit a brick wall with James. Since I don't know where in Virginia he was born, I have been unsuccessful in determining who his parents were. I don't have any idea if he came to Blount County as a boy with his parents, or if he came to Blount County on his own as a young man.
My brother, a first cousin, and I, all descendants of James Martin, have taken the autosomal DNA test at AncestryDNA and have uploaded our results to GEDmatch.com. We have matches at Ancestry to 6 other people who have a common connection. In viewing their trees, all 6 of these people have an ancestor named Nancy Martin, who according to census records, was born about 1790 in Virginia. Nancy Martin married William Isom Douglass in Blount County TN on 6 Aug 1812. None of the 6 people who descend from Nancy Martin show in their trees who her parents were. So they have evidently hit a brick wall also.
This is a wild theory, but I'm wondering if Nancy Martin, born in 1790 in Virginia, and James Martin born in 1792 in Virginia, both of whom married in Blount County, TN, might be siblings. I messaged the 6 descendants of Nancy Martin to ask them to upload their DNA results to GEDmatch. Only one responded but she did upload her results. I have 4 matching segments to her. My brother and first cousin and I triangulate with her on one of the segments. This doesn't prove my theory. But, it doesn't discount it, either.
If anyone has any information on James Martin or Nancy Martin, please contact me at MLH654@aol.com. Thanks.
