I am trying to locate information on the Campbell family(ies) residing in Cades Cove 1830 (or earlier) through approximately the mid 1850's. My ggg grandfather was Baxter B. Campbell born Carter Co. TN approximately 1817, died 1898 Graham Co. NC, married Agnes Evaline Sherrill (d.o. Joseph Sherrill) in Blount County 2 Nov 1843. I assume Baxter to be the son of Joseph and Nancy (Smith) Campbell who were married in Carter Co. TN July 22, 1809. Joseph Campbell appears in the 1830 and 40 censuses for Cades Cove (16th district) near other familiar Cades Cove families (Carter, Tipton, Cable, Oliver, etc.). Other Campbell families nearby in 1830 are Jeremiah and Westly. I assume Joseph Campbell to have at least three sons other than Baxter, these are Smith, Will H. and Alfred who all live in close proximity to each other in the 1850 Cades Cove census. I assume that Joseph Campbell came to Cades Cove with the original party from the Watauga settlement since his marriage is listed in Carter Co. and his sons list their birthplace as Carter Co. TN in later census records. I would appreciate any further information on these Campbell families if any other researchers have anything. I would also like to know if Joseph Campbell is documented as being buried in Cades Cove. Replies can be e-mailed to djoedunn@comcast.netPosted 02/06/2012
